Why Choose 16mm Triplewall Polycarbonate Roofing Sheets?
Our 16mm triplewall polycarbonate sheets are the popular choice for conservatories, carports and canopy roofs in Ireland. The three-wall internal structure delivers a U-value of 2.40 W/m²K — significantly better thermal performance than 10mm twinwall — while maintaining 77% light transmission and 200 times the impact resistance of glass. A co-extruded UV protective layer on the outer surface ensures long-term clarity and resistance to weathering.
Applications
Conservatories and Sunrooms: The most common use for 16mm triplewall in Ireland. The improved U-value keeps glazed spaces comfortable year-round and helps meet building regulation requirements for thermally adequate roof glazing.
Canopy Roofs and Carports: Strong enough for wide unsupported spans, with a maximum rafter spacing of 1050mm. Well suited to open-plan canopy designs, domestic carports and lean-to structures where a wider span is needed than 10mm twinwall allows.
Commercial Rooflights: Used in warehouses, sports halls and retail units where natural daylight is required without the weight or fragility of glass. At approximately 2.7 kg/m², it imposes a fraction of the structural load of glass.
Covered Walkways and Bike Shelters: A practical overhead cover for walkways between buildings, bike storage areas and outdoor seating canopies — robust, weatherproof and low maintenance.
Greenhouses and Agricultural Buildings: The 77% light transmission supports healthy plant growth while the triplewall structure provides better heat retention than thinner twinwall options — particularly useful in larger commercial greenhouse applications.
Need even greater insulation or wider spans? For the highest thermal performance in our polycarbonate range, see our 25mm 7-wall polycarbonate sheets. For lighter-duty projects, our 10mm twinwall is a cost-effective alternative.
Benefits
Superior Thermal Insulation: The triplewall structure reduces the U-value to 2.40 W/m²K compared to 3.20 W/m²K for 10mm twinwall. This means meaningfully less heat loss in winter and better resistance to overheating in summer — an important consideration for conservatories and sunrooms used as habitable spaces.
Impact Resistance: 200 times stronger than glass and highly resistant to hailstones, wind-blown debris and accidental impact. Far safer and more practical than glass for roofing applications, with performance maintained across a broad temperature range of -40°C to +100°C.
Light Transmission: 77% light transmission keeps spaces bright and naturally lit. The triplewall structure also gently diffuses direct sunlight, reducing harsh glare while maintaining a comfortable indoor environment beneath.
UV Protection: Co-extruded UV protective layer on the outer surface blocks over 98% of harmful UV radiation, preventing yellowing and loss of strength over time. Sheets must always be installed with the UV-protected side facing outward.
Lightweight: At approximately 2.7 kg/m², 16mm triplewall imposes far less structural load than glass, making on-site handling, cutting and installation significantly more straightforward.
Installation Note: When fitting 16mm triplewall polycarbonate on a roof, maximum rafter spacing must not exceed 1050mm. Always install with the UV-protected side facing outward and ribs running vertically or up-slope. Seal the top edge with solid aluminium tape and use a vented U-profile at the bottom edge to allow condensation to drain. Allow 3.5mm per linear metre for thermal movement in glazing bars and end closures. Full fitting advice in our multiwall polycarbonate installation guide.
