Plexiglas Perspex Acrylic Sheet

When looking for perspex sheets or plexiglas, simply ask for “acrylic” which is the generic material name. PLEXIGLASS, Perspex solid sheets are perfect for protective screens, glazing, shop fittings, signage and many other applications. PMMA sheets have fantastic resistance to UV light and weathering, along with long durability. Because PLEXIGLAS® surfaces are smooth and non-porous, they can be easily cleaned and disinfected with suitable products, making them generally suitable for areas with stringent hygiene requirements. The material itself is also free from any risks to health, because it does not release any of its contents into the environment during use. PLEXIGLAS® is often used in the medical field and for applications involving contact with food.

We keep a wide range of acrylic stocked in many thickness’s and sheet sizes. We also provide a Free Cut to Size Service on all Acrylic Sheets / Perspex Sheets / PLEXIGLAS Sheets.

Why Choose Acrylic / Perspex Sheets?

Superior Optical Clarity

92% light transmission — clearer than glass. Perfect for glazing, display cabinets, signage and anywhere optical quality matters.

Safer Than Glass

10 times more impact-resistant than glass and will not shatter into dangerous shards. Much safer for public spaces, schools and retail environments.

Excellent UV Resistance

PLEXIGLAS® acrylic maintains clarity outdoors with a 10-year UV warranty. Will not yellow or become brittle with age like many other plastics.

Easy to Fabricate

Cuts, drills, bends, glues and machines cleanly with standard tools. Suitable for thermoforming, laser cutting and CNC routing.

Scratch-Resistant Surface

More scratch-resistant than polycarbonate. Holds its appearance longer in applications where the surface is regularly handled or cleaned.

Wide Colour Range

Available in clear, opal, black, white, bronze and a full spectrum of colours. Coloured perspex sheets available in Ireland for signage and creative projects.

Popular Applications

Glazing & Windows

A lightweight, shatter-resistant alternative to glass for secondary glazing, skylights, machine guards and window replacements. Recommended thickness: 4–6mm.

Shopfitting & Retail Display

Crystal-clear display cases, shelving, product stands and point-of-sale fixtures. The optical clarity of acrylic makes products stand out. Recommended thickness: 3–5mm.

Signage & Advertising

Laser-cuttable, engravable and paintable. Widely used for illuminated signs, fascias, cut lettering and decorative panels. Recommended thickness: 3–6mm.

Protective Screens & Barriers

Counter screens, sneeze guards and safety partitions. Clear acrylic is a popular alternative to glass for commercial and retail protection. Recommended thickness: 4–6mm.

Pergola & Balcony Panels

Perspex roof panels and windbreak screens for pergolas, balconies and garden structures. UV-stable and weather-resistant outdoors. Recommended thickness: 5–6mm.

Furniture & Interior Design

How to Choose the Right Thickness

Signage & Display (2–3mm)

Recommended: 3mm — Lightweight, easy to laser cut and engrave. Ideal for signs, display panels and wall-mounted graphics.

Glazing & Protective Screens (4–6mm)

Recommended: 4–6mm — Sufficient rigidity for window replacement, counter screens and safety barriers. 6mm for larger unsupported panes.

Pergola Panels & Outdoor Use (5–6mm)

Recommended: 5–6mm — Handles wind load and outdoor conditions. UV-stable PLEXIGLAS® grade recommended for long-term outdoor applications.

Heavy-Duty Fabrication (8–12mm)

Recommended: 8–12mm — Machine guards, structural panels, aquarium glazing and industrial applications where maximum rigidity is required.

Working with Acrylic Sheets

Acrylic is one of the most workable plastics available — easy to cut, drill, bend and glue with standard tools:

Cutting: Score and snap (thin sheets), jigsaw or circular saw with fine-tooth blade. Keep protective film on while cutting.

Drilling: Use standard drill bits at low speed. Support the sheet fully to avoid cracking.

Bending: Strip heater or hot air gun. Cool bending radius is 270–330 times the sheet thickness.

Bonding: Use solvent cement (e.g. Tensol) for clean, near-invisible joints.

Laser cutting: Cast acrylic gives a polished edge straight from the laser — no secondary finishing needed.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Regular Care: Wash with a soft cloth and mild soap in lukewarm water. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean chamois or microfibre cloth. Do not use dry paper towels — they scratch the surface.

Avoid: Abrasive cleaners, solvents (acetone, MEK), petrol, benzene or any cleaner not approved for acrylic. These will craze or cloud the surface permanently.

Polishing: Minor surface scratches can be buffed out with specialist acrylic polish. Deep scratches may require wet-and-dry sanding followed by polishing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between acrylic, Perspex and PLEXIGLAS®?

They are all the same material: PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate). Acrylic is the generic name; Perspex is an ICI brand name; PLEXIGLAS® is the Röhm brand. All refer to the same clear plastic sheet material.

Is acrylic the same as plexiglass?

Yes — plexiglass (or plexiglas) is simply another common name for acrylic sheet. The terms are used interchangeably.

How does acrylic compare to polycarbonate?

Acrylic has better optical clarity and scratch resistance but lower impact resistance than polycarbonate. For glazing, signage and display, acrylic is usually the better choice. For high-impact or outdoor roofing applications, polycarbonate is stronger. See our polycarbonate sheets for comparison.

What thickness do I need for window glazing?

For most secondary glazing and window replacement applications, 4–6mm is recommended. Larger unsupported panes should use 6mm or thicker. Contact our team for specific advice on your project.

Can I use acrylic for a pergola roof or outdoors?

Yes — PLEXIGLAS® grade acrylic is UV-stable and weather-resistant with a 10-year warranty against yellowing. Use 5–6mm for pergola panels and balcony screens. Note: for heavy-duty roofing, multiwall polycarbonate offers greater impact resistance and thermal insulation.

Do you cut acrylic sheets to size?

Yes — we offer a free cut to size service on all acrylic / Perspex sheets. Simply specify your required dimensions when ordering and we will cut before dispatch.

Do you stock coloured perspex sheets in Ireland?

Yes — we stock a range of coloured acrylic / Perspex sheets including clear, opal, white, black, bronze and other colours. Contact us for availability on specific colours and thicknesses.

How do I clean acrylic sheets without scratching them?

Use a soft cloth or microfibre with warm soapy water. Never use abrasive cloths, dry paper towels or solvent-based cleaners. Minor scratches can be buffed out with acrylic polish.
