Why Choose 16mm Opal Triplewall Polycarbonate Roofing Sheets?
Our 16mm opal triplewall polycarbonate sheets are the popular choice for conservatories, carports and canopy roofs where softened, glare-free light is preferred over full brightness. The milky opal finish scatters incoming light evenly across the space beneath, eliminating harsh shadows and direct sun. The three-wall internal structure delivers the same strong U-value of 2.40 W/m²K as the clear variant, while the opal tint reduces light transmission to 42% — ideal where privacy or heat control is a priority alongside good insulation. Impact resistance is 200 times that of glass, with a co-extruded UV protective layer ensuring long-term performance.
Applications
Conservatories and Sunrooms: A popular alternative to clear for conservatories where full sunlight causes overheating or glare. The opal finish softens incoming light and reduces solar gain, making the space more comfortable in summer without sacrificing the bright, airy feel.
Canopy Roofs and Carports: Provides a consistent, diffused light underneath rather than sharp patches of sun and shadow — particularly useful for outdoor seating areas, covered patios and carports where glare from direct sunlight would otherwise be an issue.
Garden Buildings and Studios: The even, diffused light suits garden offices, hobby rooms and garden studios where a comfortable working environment is needed without the intensity of direct sunlight through a clear roof.
Covered Walkways and Bike Shelters: A practical and attractive overhead cover where the opal appearance gives a cleaner, more finished look than clear sheeting, while still admitting useful levels of natural light.
Greenhouses and Agricultural Buildings: The diffused light from opal sheeting reduces hot spots and scorching on plants directly beneath the roof — useful in summer-heavy growing conditions where full direct light transmission would cause heat stress.
Need even greater insulation or wider spans? For the highest thermal performance in our polycarbonate range, see our 25mm 7-wall polycarbonate sheets. For lighter-duty projects, our 10mm twinwall is a cost-effective alternative.
Benefits
Superior Thermal Insulation: The triplewall structure reduces the U-value to 2.40 W/m²K compared to 3.20 W/m²K for 10mm twinwall. This means meaningfully less heat loss in winter and better resistance to overheating in summer — an important consideration for conservatories and sunrooms used as habitable spaces.
Impact Resistance: 200 times stronger than glass and highly resistant to hailstones, wind-blown debris and accidental impact. Far safer and more practical than glass for roofing applications, with performance maintained across a broad temperature range of -40°C to +100°C.
Diffused, Glare-Free Light: 42% light transmission through an opal finish scatters incoming light evenly, eliminating harsh shadows, hot spots and direct glare. The result is a softer, more comfortable environment beneath the roof — particularly noticeable in conservatories and covered outdoor spaces on bright days.
UV Protection: Co-extruded UV protective layer on the outer surface blocks over 98% of harmful UV radiation, preventing yellowing and loss of strength over time. Sheets must always be installed with the UV-protected side facing outward.
Lightweight: At approximately 2.7 kg/m², 16mm triplewall imposes far less structural load than glass, making on-site handling, cutting and installation significantly more straightforward.
Installation Note: When fitting 16mm triplewall polycarbonate on a roof, maximum rafter spacing must not exceed 1050mm. Always install with the UV-protected side facing outward and ribs running vertically or up-slope. Seal the top edge with solid aluminium tape and use a vented U-profile at the bottom edge to allow condensation to drain. Allow 3.5mm per linear metre for thermal movement in glazing bars and end closures. Full fitting advice in our multiwall polycarbonate installation guide.
